Our Dance Program guides students of all ages and levels in a positive, nurturing environment where each is encouraged to be the best dancer he or she can be. Dance lessons are offered in ballet and pointe, tap, hip-hop, Broadway, and jazz/contemporary. Our Triple Threat Musical Theater program combines Broadway-style dance choreography with singing and acting lessons to create a truly “total performer.”

Ballet and Pointe, Tap, Hip-Hop, Broadway, Jazz/Contemporary*

The Ridgewood Conservatory’s ballet and pointe, tap, hip-hop, Broadway and jazz/contemporary group classes include all levels of instruction. Musical Theater classes are offered in conjunction with our Triple Threat Musical Theater Program. Please call for schedules if not posted below.
DANCE CLASSES WE OFFER INCLUDE:
PRE-BALLET (3-4 year olds) Our youngest dancers study the basic positions of the feet, port de bras or arm movements, as well as simple jumps, gallops, skips and gentle stretching, as they learn how dance is used to tell a story.
Fall ’17: TUESDAY 3:30PM; SATURDAY 9:00AM; SUNDAY 10:00AM
INTRO TO BALLET (5-6 year olds) Our five and six year old ballet dancers study the various positions of the feet and arms, beginning work at the barre, plies, piques, passes, transfer of weight, as well as how to use movement as a form of self-expression and story-telling.

BALLET LEVEL 1 (ages 7-9) Student-dancers learn the fundamentals and discipline of Classical Ballet, focusing on Ballet technique, proper body alignment, terminology and musicality.
Fall ’17: FRIDAY 4:00PM, SAT 1:00PM (Mixed age 7+)
BALLET LEVEL 2 (ages 9-11) Ballet students progress quickly to age-appropriate goals, learning the fundamentals of Ballet in an encouraging, disciplined atmosphere.
Fall ’17: SUNDAY 1:00PM
INTERMEDIATE BALLET / BEGINNER POINTE (ages 12-16) Students utilize previously learned ballet technique to work on pointe, with additional exercises to strengthen legs, feet and ankles. This class may also be taken by students who are not yet on pointe to further develop and strengthen the necessary muscles. (Pointe class requires two or more ballet classes per week. Readiness for pointe study is determined by the instructor.)

PRE-BALLET / TAP (3-4 year olds) Three and four year old dancers develop posture, coordination, flexibility, rhythm, and the awareness of movement with music.
Fall ’17: SATURDAY 10:00AM
INTRO TO TAP (5-6 year olds) Our five and six year old tap dancers are introduced to formal tap training, learning practiced exercises and proper technique, increasing coordination, and developing a sound awareness of rhythm.
Fall ’17: TUESDAY 5:30PM; SATURDAY 2:00PM
TAP (ages 7-11) Student-dancers develop an understanding of Tap through music, rhythm and body movement, studying basic technique through ‘tap barre’ and progressing to center floor exercises and combinations.
Fall ’17: TUESDAY 6:30PM
TAP (ages 12-16) Tap students work to master detailed articulation of sound by using their feet as a percussive instrument, learning muscle control, coordination and rhythm in this exciting, high-energy class.

INTRO TO HIP-HOP (ages 5-6) In this fun introductory class, our five and six year olds become familiar with popular Hip-Hop moves, stylized technique and beginner rhythmic tones of jazz dance, while improving their coordination and physical strength.
Fall ’17: MONDAY 3:30PM; WEDNESDAY 4:00PM (boys only); SATURDAY 12:00PM
HIP-HOP (ages 7-11) Beginner Hip-Hop dancers explore the basic movements and rhythms of urban “street” dance, while practicing warm-ups necessary to stretch and tone, learning various styles and proper technique, and mastering fun, high-energy routines.
Fall ’17: MONDAY 4:30PM; SATURDAY 2:00PM; SUNDAY 12:00PM
HIP-HOP (ages 12-16) Students become familiar with Hip-Hop culture through the element of dance, learning fundamental funk styles and B-boying, and progressing to both freestyle dance and dynamic combinations.

BROADWAY – Ballet, Jazz, Tap (ages 7-11 and 12-16) Student-dancers learn choreography from selected popular musicals, old and new, as they study Broadway and Musical dance styles, practice performance skills and learn how to develop stage presence through character acting and dancing. (This class is grouped by age.)
Fall ’17: THURSDAY 4:00PM (7-11 yrs); THURSDAY 5:00PM (12-16 yrs)
JAZZ / CONTEMPORARY (ages 7-11) Learning the fundamentals of Jazz and Contemporary dance, students work on full body integration, focusing on developing strength and dynamic quality for performance in a creative, energetic environment.

JAZZ / CONTEMPORARY (ages 12-16) Beginner and intermediate student-dancers work to build a strong foundation in Jazz/Contemporary technique and terminology, strengthening coordination and exploring a wide range of musical styles.
Fall ’17: THURSDAY 7:00PM
ADULT BALLET (adults 17+) This ballet class focuses on exercises and technique, with an additional emphasis on terminology and body alignment. Our adult ballet students develop an aesthetic awareness of the classical ballet as they warm-up at the barre and proceed to center floor work and combinations.

ADULT TAP (adults 17+) Aside from being a great form of exercise, tap dance sharpens reflexes and improves memory skills and coordination. Our adult tap students work toward establishing fundamental tap movements, vocabulary, basic rhythms and steps that progress into fun and lively combinations.

Fall ’17 Semester: September 4, 2017 – January 28, 2018
Private dance instruction offers the student the opportunity to focus on improving his or her overall technique, learn new skills, advance to a new class level, or prepare for an upcoming performance or audition. Private instruction is offered at all levels on a semester basis during the Fall and Spring, and on a ‘per lesson’ basis over the summer.
*Available for ages 6-adult.

Appropriate dance attire is required for all classes.
BALLET ATTIRE: Girls wear leotards (no embellishments, skirts or tutus), tights and leather ballet slippers. Boys wear plain white t-shirts, black jazz pants or tight fitting leggings/sweats and leather ballet slippers.
TAP DANCE ATTIRE: Same attire as ballet with tap shoes (Tap).
HIP-HOP ATTIRE: Sneakers or dance shoes designated for use in class only, loose comfortable “workout” clothing (no jeans or casual dress attire).
Please Note: Hair must be worn tied back in all classes.
All classes are subject to enrollment.
* Note: Semesters may be extended as makeups for classes cancelled due to inclement weather or teacher absences.
